Do the PAL/NTSC converters work? Or is there a loss in the picture quality?

My new TV will be PAL Multi, whatever it means. That's a tricky conversion. First you're dealing with different frame rates (29.97 in NTSC and 25 in PAL). Then you've got the frequency differences (60Hz in North America and 50Hz in PAL). Then you've got the resolution difference (720x486 in NTSC and 720x576 in PAL). So how good any converter box will do is hard to say. I'd really have to see it in action myself (kind of a trial and error situation). But that might be hard to do considering you're looking at an online purchase and moving continents. But its hard to say definitively one way or the other, quality wise, just based on a description.

Are you sure the new TV won't support NTSC? I've never pressed the issue hard enough with UK friends to know for sure, but many have implied to me that they can play NTSC stuff on their sets now with no difficulty. But what that is a result of I'm not 100% sure (but I know they aren't using any fancy converters).

I would contact the manufacturer of the TV you intend to buy and ask them. More and more HDTVs are supporting both NTSC and PAL (it might only work via component or HDMI, but it may at least offer it). We bought one for work from Costco that we thought was NTSC and HD only. Then on a test we fed it component PAL and hey look there it played it back.
