RADIO STATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Recently someone declared that outdoor advertising -- or, as it's more widely known, "billboards" -- is the only form of mass media not to have been rendered obsolete by Social Media.

I was grateful to that person for having brought to my consciousness something that until now I'd thought only subconsciously: that I've been noticing billboards more. That's largely to the kinds of animation being used by billboards today; the human eye is programming to react to movement.

He's wrong, however, when he says Social Media have killed radio.

No one saw this coming. But it turned out that of all mass media, radio is the most effective at driving targeted website traffic.

Now, of course, it's easy to explain: Far more people listen to radio while sitting in front of the computer than while watching television or reading a newspaper.

Any business website owner who has mastered radio advertising or radio promotions will tell you that as soon as the first radio commercial (or radio promo) airs, their Web traffic leaps.

Of course, a badly crafted campaign will not drive Web traffic. The typically mediocre (or bad) radio commercial is likely to fail.

Everyone agrees that "word of mouth" is the most effective form of advertising. That is correct: The most persuasive communication is that of a trusted friend or advisor, whispering in your ear.

Radio advertising is the ultimate "word of mouth"...

"Word of mouth" on a mass scale...controled by the advertiser.

A good radio commercial is a trusted friend or advisor, whispering in your ear. Of all the traditional mass media, radio by far is the most personal. It's one-to-one communication. (How often do you feel as though a billboard is engaging you in a conversation?)

At least one other party disagrees with the concept of Social Media killing radio: Social Media. When Facebook wanted to let Houston residents know about a live (not virtual) party they were throwing, how did they choose to invite as many people as possible?

With a local radio advertising campaign.

What are the microphones that the radio stations use that work far away from there station?

Radio stations have a mic and they are miles away from there station and it stills connects with there station.

Most are using Cellphones these days to call in. The old days we used "Marty Units" that had to be positioned just right for a good signal to the station. Some times we use the old reliable phone line.
There are all kinds of equipment out there, next time you see them out and about ask them when they are not broadcasting what equipment they use. Some will actually have a clue others will not.

Channel 5 Hires New Traffic Reporter (cincinnati)

Former Indianapolis traffic reporter Kyla Woods moved down I-74 to replace
Brandon Hamilton as WLWT-TV's traffic reporter. I saw her on News 5 this
morning. At Indiananpolis' WXIN-TV (Fox 59), she was a traffic  and features
reporter, and host of a "Mondays with Kyla"  morning news segment. She also
was a traffic reporter for ABC affiliate WRTV-TV (Channel [...]
